Student Interns Wanted

The Valley Photo Center located on the Upper Level of Tower Square, 1500 Main Street in Springfield MA is a 501c3 not for profit gallery whose mission is to share information about the art and science of photography and to educate our members and the general public to bring about a greater appreciation for the art of photography in the valley with an emphasis on the urban communities.

We work to accomplish our mission primarily by offering monthly photographic exhibitions in or gallery during the academic year from September until June. In addition to one man shows by photographic artists we also have open submission and student open submission shows that allow everyone to share their photography in a gallery setting.

We also offer workshops and meet the artist’s receptions for every show. The receptions give the public an opportunity to meet the artists and hear short talks about their work. The Valley Photo Center provides refreshments at these shows and they are free and open to the public.

The Valley Photo Center also has a web and social media presence with a Facebook page, web site, and a Meetup group to promote its programs and exhibitions.

The intern would assist the director of the Valley Photo Center in managing the gallery and other volunteers. The intern would learn how to write a business plan for the gallery, make and work within a budget, schedule and train volunteer docents, write grants, edit the website and social media accounts, book artists, hang and take down gallery shows, deigning a digital gallery, to name a few. They can work on some of these projects at home or school and will also have access to a desk in the gallery.

Because we are a volunteer organization that works with only a couple of part time staff the intern will have the opportunity to take on as much responsibility as they feel comfortable with and certainly will be able to concentrate on any particular area of interest in gallery management they would like. For example he or she may want to concentrate in the actual mechanics of exhibiting and hanging shows or they may want to concentrate in the back room all important support areas of fund raising, social media and web programs. Interns receive free membership in the Valley Photo Center and free parking during the day in the Tower Square garage when they work in the gallery.

If you would like to apply to become an intern please download this application, fill it out, and send it to:  valleyphotocenter@icloud.com.
